FLORENCE OBI ACADEMY
FOA: PUTTING THEORY INTO PRACTICE
PROF. FLORENCE .B. OBI
As a trainer and mentor of teachers I had always dreamt of giving back to the society through the establishment of a school to put into practice what I had taught for more than 28 years. This dream got stronger by the day especially when I visit schools to supervise students on teaching practice. Florence Obi Academy is the result of that vision and dream.
The school was founded on diversity and inclusiveness. It has children from diverse backgrounds, ethic groups and cultures. The diversity provides children with the opportunity to interact among themselves and make friends across groups. Despite the diversity, the identity, values and beliefs of the children will not be lost but will be broadened and sharpened to make them better citizens of the society.
Children irrespective of circumstances of life setting and needed services are welcomed. The principles of least restrictive environment (LRE) and zero reject are given attention and practiced in FOA.
To achieve the principle of zero reject and LRE, special education teachers from the Department of Special Education of the University of Calabar have willingly volunteered to provide special services as and at when needed to the children.
Specialist teachers are also engaged to teach the children such subjects as; computer appreciation which will prepare them for higher academic challenges and effective integration into the society. The school currently operates the Nigeria curriculum with skills enhancement.
The Montessori and Jolly phonics methods are used to prepare the children for excellence. We are making efforts to introduce the British and American curriculum as the school develops.
Our watch word is excellence while we promote core values of hard work, respect, honesty, tolerance, cleanliness and the fear of God. Our handling of the children is not only professional but also based on sound Christian values.
The school has a very serene and healthy environment with a field for recreation. All our classrooms are clean, safe and fitted with toilet facilities for personal hygiene. Pre-primary school classes have televisions for educational games and teaching.
The school has a rich library to inculcate in the young ones the reading culture. The school also has a perimeter fence for safety of the children and a stand-by generator to compliment the public power supply as well as a bus to ease the stress of parents' school runs.
The 8 members Board of Governors, Management staff and Teachers are renowned educationists with a passion of midwifing FOA to highest heights.
